5 Steps to Becoming a Business Analyst, by Laura Brandenburg

You might be asking, “How do I become a business analyst?” I’m going to help you discover your answer to this question.
First, let me explain why there is no one answer to this question (and hence why this post is so long — if you want to review and dig deeper into these concepts over a series of a few weeks, be sure to join our free email course). Your path to business analysis is going to be based on your own unique career background and professional situation. It will also be based on the type of business analyst you’d like to become and what your longer-term career goals are.
I can’t write a post that gives one answer or one path because I don’t know what your career background is, what your strengths are, or what’s pulling you into the BA profession. (And yes, I know that doesn’t stop others from suggesting silver bullets, but, well, there is no bone in my body that’s going to let me do that and sleep well at night.)
Although there is not one path, there is an answer for you. There might even be several possible answers from which you can choose. What I can promise is that the 5 steps below will help you find your path to business analysis and make this career change as painless as possible by crafting a plan that leverages your inner business analyst.

Step 1: Build Your Business Analysis Knowledge

As with entering any new domain, building knowledge of business analysis knowledge is an important part of your career change. And there are several ways to accumulate enough knowledge to be successful. You can read the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge®, though I really recommend that those new to the profession choose a more accessible text. The BABOK is amazing, but it’s not written to be accessible by aspiring business analysts…it’s written to be a reference guide for working business analysts. The Software Requirements Memory Jogger or Seven Steps to Mastering Business Analysis are good alternatives.
As part of learning about business analysis, you’ll also want to get clear on the difference between a business analyst and business analysis. Being a “business analyst” does not equate to one distinct role – so there are many professionals filling different business analyst roles who all consider themselves business analysts.
Becoming knowledgeable about business analysis is only the first step and the biggest mistake I see is that many aspiring BAs spend way too much time here, neglecting the realities of the next 4 steps. Here are a few posts to help you plan to do “just enough” in step 1:

Step 2: Identify Your Business Analyst Career Experiences

Just like we still ponder, “what came first, the chicken or the egg?”, we also get stuck with, “what came first, the business analyst or the business analyst experience?” Entry-level BA jobs are relatively few and far between. The good news is that if you have some professional experience, you probably have more business analysis experience than you realize. Michelle Swoboda tackles this concept in response to the following reader question: How do I get beyond being a jack of all trades?
Many of today’s successful business analysts built their careers by plugging gaps and wearing multiple hats, and many of them still do. If you’ve been wearing multiple hats, it may be that one of them is being a business analyst. Mining your career history for transferable skills can reap great rewards, none less than the fact that each year of paid business analyst experience you identify has the potential to boost your salary by $923 per year, according to the most recent BA salary survey.
Everyone comes to BA from somewhere else. There is no common background amongst business analysts and nearly every career path offers some great potential for those looking to become BAs. Here are discussions of how different career paths could be relevant to your business analyst career.
How do I transition from QA Engineer to BA? (my personal favorite… :) )

Step 3: Identify Your Leverage Points

Whether or not you have a deep career history in business analysis, it’s likely that one or more elements of your career history give youexpertise to leverage into business analysis. Whether it’s your knock-your-socks off communication skills or your deep experience in a relevant industry domain, you have a quality that potential managers are specifically hiring for.
If you are currently employed in a company that employs BAs, then your most valuable leverage point very well could be knowledge of that individual organization, the business model, and the business stakeholders.
Other factors can include:

Step 4: Build Your Personalized Roadmap

Once you cultivate an awareness of business analysis and discover your qualifications, both within business analysis and beyond, then it’s time to set a BA career goal and build your roadmap to achieve it.
This might seem simple. After all, you know you want to become a BA. But because the role is so multi-faceted, your goal will need to be more specific to be realistic. You’ll also need to put a time frame around it and ensure that it is achievable given the time and resources you have to invest in your career change. Then, of course, you craft a plan to get from “A” to “BA”.
Part of your roadmap will likely involve building new business analyst experiences. In this video blog post, I tackle the challenge of building on-the-job business analyst experiences.
But even if you are unemployed or employed in a job with limited opportunities, there are still options. You can start accumulating BA experience through volunteer positions. And if you still have doubts, read Kimberley Heath’s success story about how she created a BA volunteer opportunity for herself and what she learned from the experience.

Step 5: Focus Your Business Analyst Job Search

While you might be in a position to propose a business analyst role in your firm, oftentimes becoming a business analyst involves a job search process. A successful job search starts with focus. By letting go of all kinds of irrelevant positions for which you are not well-positioned to succeed, you free up your time and energy for the positions with the highest potential. For a new business analyst, your leverage points will play a key part in defining this focus.
We have a whole host of resources on this topic. Read How to Find a Business Analyst Job.
Because of the necessity of prior BA experiences for most BA jobs, it might be that you need to explore a transitional role to lead you on the path to BA. Here we address what a future BA can learn from a technical analyst role.  And Adrian Reed provides a comprehensive overview of roles that can lead to business analyst jobs.

How to recommend a Facebbok Page to Friends..

Abstract:
Give your friends the opportunity to 'Like' a Facebook Page that you administer

Do you administer Facebook Pages? Facebook Pages you've either created or become an administrator of? Then you have the ability to recommend your administered Facebook Pages to your friends!

I've been asked how to do this many times. I've decided to make a proper set of instructions and refer to this when I am next asked.

How to invite friends to your Facebook Page

  1. Visit the Facebook homepage. Click on the 'facebook' logo on the top left of the screen.
  2. Visit the Facebook Page that you administrate. I do this via the drop-down arrow on the top right. Then under 'Use Facebook as:' click on the Facebook Page you are about to recommend. If you administer many Facebook Pages you may need to scroll the mouse wheel over that list to see them all.
  3. Open the 'Admin Panel'. Click the 'Admin Panel' button on the top right above the timeline graph if the 'Admin Panel' is not already open. The 'Admin Panel' has sections labelled 'Notifications', 'Messages', 'New Likes', 'Insights' and 'Page Tips' and sits on the very top of your Facebook Page.
  4. View your Facebook Page as your Profile (and not as the Page). With the 'Admin Panel' open, select the 'Manage' menu and choose 'Use Facebook as (your Profile name)'. This switches you from seeing Facebook as your Page to seeing Facebook as your Profile. Note: If it says 'Use Facebook as (your Page name)' then leave this step; you are already viewing the Page as your Profile.
  5. Invite Friends to your Page. With the 'Admin Panel' open, select the 'Build Audience' menu and select 'Invite Friends'. If you don't see 'Invite Friends' then you are still viewing the Facebook Page as the Page - read 'View your Facebook Page as your Profile (and not as the Page).
  6. Choose your friends. A dialogue box appears called 'Suggest (Page name) to friends'. Tick people who you like to invite to the Facebook Page. Some people you may not be able to tick (you have invited them already, they are a fan already). Use the drop down on the top left of the dialogue box to filter the list of people. Refinements can be made for Recent Interactions, Search All Friends, by friends Locations, by Facebook Groups, by your friends list, Selected friends you ticked already.
  7. Submit your recommendation. Once you finalised your selection, click the 'Submit' button on the bottom right of the dialogue box. You receive a notification that your recommendation has been sent.

That's it! You have successfully recommended Facebook Pages you administer to your friends!

Please read the following if you don't see 'Invite Friends'.
Not having 'Invite Friends' tells me that you are viewing your Page as the Page itself and not as your own personal Profile.
Pages do not have friends, therefore 'Invite Friends' is not available when viewing the Page as the Page itself.
Personal Profiles do have friends, and 'Invite Friends' does become an option when viewing your Page as your own personal Profile.
Step 4 is the one required to change viewing your Page from Page to Profile in order to see 'Invite Friends'.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Free Download!!

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Harry Potter Book 3) Released- 1999

Amazon.com Review

For most children, summer vacation is something to look forward to. But not for our 13-year-old hero, who's forced to spend his summers with an aunt, uncle, and cousin who detest him. The third book in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series catapults into action when the young wizard "accidentally" causes the Dursleys' dreadful visitor Aunt Marge to inflate like a monstrous balloon and drift up to the ceiling. Fearing punishment from Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon (and from officials at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry who strictly forbid students to cast spells in the nonmagic world of Muggles), Harry lunges out into the darkness with his heavy trunk and his owl Hedwig.

As it turns out, Harry isn't punished at all for his errant wizardry. Instead he is mysteriously rescued from his Muggle neighborhood and whisked off in a triple-decker, violently purple bus to spend the remaining weeks of summer in a friendly inn called the Leaky Cauldron. What Harry has to face as he begins his third year at Hogwarts explains why the officials let him off easily. It seems that Sirius Black--an escaped convict from the prison of Azkaban--is on the loose. Not only that, but he's after Harry Potter. But why? And why do the Dementors, the guards hired to protect him, chill Harry's very heart when others are unaffected? Once again, Rowling has created a mystery that will have children and adults cheering, not to mention standing in line for her next book. Fortunately, there are four more in the works. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Free Download!!

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Harry Potter Book 2) Released- 1998

Amazon.com Review

It's hard to fall in love with an earnest, appealing young hero like Harry Potter and then to watch helplessly as he steps into terrible danger! And in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the much anticipated sequel to the award-winning Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, he is in terrible danger indeed. As if it's not bad enough that after a long summer with the horrid Dursleys he is thwarted in his attempts to hop the train to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to begin his second year. But when his only transportation option is a magical flying car, it is just his luck to crash into a valuable (but clearly vexed) Whomping Willow. Still, all this seems like a day in the park compared to what happens that fall within the haunted halls of Hogwarts.

Chilling, malevolent voices whisper from the walls only to Harry, and it seems certain that his classmate Draco Malfoy is out to get him. Soon it's not just Harry who is worried about survival, as dreadful things begin to happen at Hogwarts. The mysteriously gleaming, foot-high words on the wall proclaim, "The Chamber of Secrets Has Been Opened. Enemies of the Heir, Beware." But what exactly does it mean? Harry, Hermione, and Ron do everything that is wizardly possible--including risking their own lives--to solve this 50-year-old, seemingly deadly mystery. This deliciously suspenseful novel is every bit as gripping, imaginative, and creepy as the first; familiar student concerns--fierce rivalry, blush-inducing crushes, pedantic professors--seamlessly intertwine with the bizarre, horrific, fantastical, or just plain funny. Once again, Rowling writes with a combination of wit, whimsy, and a touch of the macabre that will leave readers young and old desperate for the next installment. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Free Download!!

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter, Book 1) Released-1997

Harry Potter
and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
Say you've spent the first 10 years of your life sleeping under the stairs of a family who loathes you. Then, in an absurd, magical twist of fate you find yourself surrounded by wizards, a caged snowy owl, a phoenix-feather wand, and jellybeans that come in every flavor, including strawberry, curry, grass, and sardine. Not only that, but you discover that you are a wizard yourself! This is exactly what happens to young Harry Potter in J.K. Rowling's enchanting, funny debut novel, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. In the nonmagic human world--the world of "Muggles"--Harry is a nobody, treated like dirt by the aunt and uncle who begrudgingly inherited him when his parents were killed by the evil Voldemort. But in the world of wizards, small, skinny Harry is famous as a survivor of the wizard who tried to kill him. He is left only with a lightning-bolt scar on his forehead, curiously refined sensibilities, and a host of mysterious powers to remind him that he's quite, yes, altogether different from his aunt, uncle, and spoiled, piglike cousin Dudley.

How to Add Google Plus Page Administrators

When brand pages were introduced on Google Plus, adding page administrators was not an option.
If you were logged in under your personal account and wanted to post something for X brand, you had to log out and login with X brands info. It wasn’t very convenient to say the least.
But the good news is that there is now a way to add managers to Google Plus pages and this quick tutorial will show you exactly how to do it.
Note: click images to enlarge.

How to Add Google Plus Page Administrators

Step 1
Login to Google Plus using the username and password for the profile that is associated with the page in question.
To be clear, pages must be associated with a profile, and connecting them with a personal account probably isn’t the best idea.
Step 2
Once you are logged in, select the page in question that is associated with the Google Plus profile you just logged in for. Make sure you select the page, not the profile because the manager option is only associated with the page.
For this example click where you see the arrow pointing to “1 Page.”
Step 3
Click the settings button in the top right hand corner.
Step 4
Click “Google + Settings.”
Step 5
Now  click “Managers.”
If you didn’t do Step 2, you will not see the word “Managers” as shown in this screenshot.
Step 6
Insert the email you want to use to manage the Google+ brand page.
If you want to be able to use your personal Google accounts while acting as an administrator, make sure you use you personal Gmail account for this step.
Step 7
After clicking “Invite” in Step 6, an email will be sent to the email address you provided. Upon receiving click the red “Become a manager” box.
Step 8
After clicking “Become a manager” in the previous step, a new page will come up that allows you to select the email address you will be using for moderation.
Select the address and click “Continue.”
Step 9
This step confirms that you want to become a manager of X page. You’ll need to check the terms box and then click “Accept.”
This screen confirms that you are now a manager for the page. Click “Manage Page” to get started.
Once you become a page manager, this screen shot shows you where you can toggle back and forth from your personal profile, and the page account you manage.
Hopefully this information will help you set up Google Plus page managers, which will likely make the service more convenient to use.
Two thumbs up for no more logging in and out of various accounts!

Free ebook "2 States: the story of my marriage" by Chetan Bhagat

chetan
The New York Times called Chetan Bhagat as the biggest-selling English-language novelist in India’s history. With his first three books already being widely read in India, he released his fourth book recently which generated a lot of anticipation before the release on Twitter and other online spaces.

Chetan Bhagat released the new book on Oct 8th, titled, 2 States: the story of my marriage. It’s a story of inter-state marriage in India. Love story of  a Punjabi guy Krish, and a Tamil Brahmin girl Ananya. Marriage of paranthas and idlis, paneer and coconut. Chetan, in his own style, dedicates this book to his in-laws. In the disclaimer, he says, though the book is inspired by his own family and experiences, he requests the book must be seen as a work of fiction.

2states
The initial pages of the book are set up in IIM-Ahmedabad. Krish and Ananya meet in the canteen for the first time and eventually over a few days of combined study, fall in love. Life is great for them until their families meet each other. It takes sometime before they realize that they may not be able to convince their families to support their marriage. The twist in the tale is, they want to marry with their parents’ consent rather than choosing the easy way of eloping. Inter-caste marriages are still a taboo in India and let alone an inter-state marriage of a Punjabi and a Tam Brahmin.

The meeting of two families on the convocation day at the college, sets the drama into motion. Rest of the story is about how youngistan fights oldistan to get the approval for marriage. The boy tries to get acceptance from the girl’s family and the girl tires to get acceptance from the boy’s family while both of them are trying to get acceptance from their respective families. I am not going to reveal everything here as I don’t want to be a suspense spoiler. To ease the nerves of those who involve too much into stories, let me say that it has a happy ending. In fact, how can it be made into a bollywood movie if it has a sad ending.

The cultural differences of north-indian families and south-indian families are portrayed very well in a funny way.

Humor is one of the best things in this book. Loaded with some really good similes and metaphors.
If you are a Chetan Bhagat’s fan, you will enjoy this book more than his previous book, Three mistakes of my life.
For those who are not fans of Chetan’s books, or haven’t read his books yet, I would say, you pickup this book if you want to kill a boring afternoon with  ‘a quick read’.
If you are a fan of literary fiction and classics, if you read more of Tharoors, Seths, Roys, and Ghoshs, I would say it is better you stay away from this book.
Coming to me, I am a great fan of Chetan’s books. I enjoy reading his books as they are very easy to read and provide an enjoy while reading.  I think, the best from him is yet to come. If you want to read this book download from here by clicking on name of  book "2 States: the story of my marriage"..!!

Best Books Sellers in India in 2011 and Publishing Trends

Which books are best sellers in India? I couldn't find any best sellers list in India substantiated with data such as number of books sold.

Every book website or book store develops its own list without any data points. I decided to check out four leading sources ( 2 websites and 2 book stores) and tried to develop a common list.

The sources I referred to are Flipkart, Infibeam, Crossword and Landmark bestsellers list. (Data retrieved on Oct 5).

My hypothesis is that if a book appears in more than one bestseller list then it is likely to be a best seller. Out of 200 + book list with this criteria , I narrowed down to 56 best sellers book list. ( excluding academics books )

I further classified these 56 best sellers among 3 categories -

Since I had the best sellers data, the Analyst in me couldn't stop analyzingPublishing Trends

Authors

Indian Authors are more than foreign authors in the best sellers list, though difference is narrower than I expected...

Publishers

Leading Publishers for Indian Authors are Westland, Harpercollins, Rupa, Penguin, Shristi and Random House which all have more than one publication in best seller list. The list was on expected lines but I am surprised by the relative ranking.

Pricing

Contrary to my earlier perception that success of best sellers is because of low pricing , the two third of best sellers are not low priced.

Pages

Contrary to my earlier perception, in the twitter age, the necessary condition for best seller is not crisp content or less pages. The two thirds of best sellers are with heavy content.

Popular vs Classics

Any book which is among best sellers list even after 5 years of its publication is more than popular and can be called as classic ( irrespective of the critique) . I found 6 books in the list which are published before 2006

The Fountainhead
Good to Great
Rich Dad Poor Dad
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective
Five Point Someone
The Alchemist

Next few years will tell whether few of the popular books will move to classic status ( Contender are books by Rashmi Bansal, Rujuta Diwekar and Stieg Larsson among others)

Conclusion

Can these trends about pricing, pages and publishers help any author in increasing his success chances in writing or publishing his book?
